Over the decades, symposium [on Molecular Structure and Spectroscopy] attendees were introduced, often for the first time, to the revolutionary technological advances that characterize the history of spectroscopy, such as the introduction of coherent radiation sources in the infrared, visible and ultraviolet, the use of interferometers and the advent of Fourier transform spectroscopy, the use of computers to model spectra, the coupling of lasers to molecular beams, the use of various matrix isolation techniques, the introduction of ultrafast techniques, the advent of broadband microwave spectroscopic techniques, and the application of frequency comb technologies to problems in molecular spectroscopy. As a timely example, recent symposia have included several talks on applications of attosecond science to longstanding problems in molecular structure and dynamics. The types of systems probed with this collection of methods have in large part remained true to the original emphasis on isolated molecules, including van der Waals complexes and molecular clusters. In more recent decades, much emphasis has been placed on the spectroscopy of molecules in the interstellar medium and in planetary atmospheres.
