Bratislava
The QSCP 2002 workshop will be held near Bratislava, the capital city of Slovakia, situated in the south-west of the country on the River Danube near Vienna. The city was founded before the 10th century and was known originally as Pressburg. It gained strategic importance when strong fortifications were erected during the 12th century: from 1541 to 1784 it was the capital of Hungary. In 1805, during the Napoleonic Wars, the French Emperor Napoleon met the Holy Roman Emperor Francis II in the city and imposed the peace terms known as the Treaty of Pressburg. When Czechoslovakia was created in 1918, after World War I, the city was renamed Bratislava and made capital of the province of Slovakia. Slovakia and the other provinces of Czechoslovakia were abolished in January 1949, and the city became the capital of the newly created Bratislava Region. The region was abolished in 1960. On January 1, 1993 Bratislava became the capital of a newly independent Slovakia.
Casta-Papiernicka
QSCP-VII will be held at Casta-Papiernicka. The Casta-Papiernicka Centre is a special facility of the Office of the National Council of the Slovak Republic. It is situated about 40 km from Bratislava and surrounded by forest of Karpaty and the Little Carpathians, which are the foothills of the Carpathian mountains. The Carpathian Mountains are the major mountain system of central and eastern Europe, extending about 1,450 km in a semicircle from Bratislava to the gorge known as the Iron Gate near Orsova, Romania. Both ends of the arc rest upon the River Danube. The Carpathians, varying between 32 and 257 km in width, are divided into smaller ranges, including the Little Carpathians, the White Carpathians, the High Tatra Range, the East Carpathians, and the Transylvanian Alps. The system, although extensive, is not high; the highest point, Gerlachovka Peak in Slovakia, is 2,655 m above sea level. Sporting and leisure facilities at the Casta-Papiernicka Centre include: a covered swimming-pool, billiards, a fitness centre, bowling, squash, a steam-bath and sauna.
