Electrochemistry in vacuo:
Ion studies on thin ice films
Using ultra high vacuum techniques and molecular and ion beams it is
possible to construct and study the electrochemical double layer on
electrode surfaces immersed in solvents. Case studies using hexane and
water solvents and Cs+ and H2O+ ions
enabled the determination of solvent dielectric constants, ion mobility,
and structural and phase changes in the solvents as a function of
temperature.
