Mechanotransduction in lung epithelium and lung surfactant metabolism

Lung surfactant is a mixture of lipids and proteins that lines the alveolar epithelium and reduces surface tension at the air-liquid interface. This keeps the alveoli open, especially at the end of expiration. Surfactant homeostasis is essential for the integrity and function of lung parenchyma. It is maintained through the continuous biosynthesis, secretion and recycling of its components.
